Efforts to protect the environment have been prevalent throughout history, but it became a major issue among the American public in the 1970s. Following an oil spill in Santa Barbara, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day to bring national attention to the ecosystem, mobilizing millions of Americans in the fight for the environment. Now, every year on April 22nd, we celebrate this day and our Earth, reminding us that this is our only planet, and we need to fight for it. Environmental issues may seem too large-scale to make any difference, but everyone can play a part, no matter how small. What can you do?
Turn off the lights when leaving a room
Turn the water off while brushing your teeth
Take shorter showers
Use small and fuel-efficient cars, bike, walk, take public transport, or carpool
Recycle properly. Not only should you recycle items, like glass, paper, and plastic, but also learn your local recycling guidelines.
Reduce consumption – the constant buying of new clothes, single-use plastics, and excess packaging from organizations like Amazon hurts the environment more than one may think
Use reusable items, such as water bottles, bags, and coffee cups
Unplug electronics when not in use
Use LED lightbulbs that require significantly less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and have a longer life span
Plant native flowers and trees
Volunteer for local cleanups
And most of all…
Speak out! Your voice matters in the fight against climate change!
