Pixar’s Soul is the newest addition to Pixar’s movie collection. Soul had an initial release date to theaters on June 19, 2020, but due to COVID-19, it was then released to Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, and a Disney+ exclusive. It was available to watch on December 25, 2020. Soul is an animated film directed by Pete Docter, and written by Pete Docter, Kemp Powers, and Mike Jones. The two main stars in this movie are Jamie Foxx, who voices Joe Gardner, and Tina Fey, the voice of 22. 

Soul follows the story of a New York music teacher, Joe Gardner, who lost his motivation for the thing he loves most, music. Joe’s soul is transported out of his body and into a dimension known as, The Great Before, where souls become their own unique selves. Through the help of 22, an infant soul Joe met, Joe tries to find a way to get back to his body and continue his life on Earth. Along the way, 22, who used to have no intention of becoming human, sees the beauty of the real world, while Joe finds purpose in his life.

Soul is a beautiful film in nearly every aspect. The animation in this film is beautiful. All the colors pop out and are very vibrant. Though the human characters are not designed to look like actual human beings, they are still very well done. The concept of the Soul characters is unique, and they are animated beautifully. The writing in this movie was top notch. The characters’ arcs in this movie were amazing. You have two characters, one that has experienced life and one that hasn’t, both looking at life on Earth and the true meaning of one’s “purpose” on Earth a little differently. Overall, this movie has a great message: just be yourself and who you want to be. Everyone has their own purpose in life and it is up to them to find it. The movie consisted of various parts that can bring laughter, joy, and possibly even tears. Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey both did a fantastic job with their performances. It is a much harder task to show emotion in an animated movie since the actors can only express emotions through their voices, but these two did just that perfectly.  Additionally, Pete Docter did a fantastic job directing this movie. 

Soul is a great movie that is a fun watch for the whole family. It has some deeper messages that younger kids may not understand, but for teens and adults, the message this story tells is really touching. All aspects of this movie were executed perfectly: the animation, the acting, the writing, and the directing were all great. This movie received great reviews as well with IMDb giving it an 8.1/10 and Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 95%. I highly recommend taking the time to watch this movie if you haven’t already. It is definitely worth your time as Pixar has created yet another fantastic movie in Soul.
