Back and Better?

After the unprecedented year we’ve had, we’re finally back in school! It is no secret that Covid-19 changed the world as we know it. Last year, the school looked a little different. With some students following the hybrid schedule and others going all-virtual, there was a big adjustment to be made.

Two months in and it seems opinions about the new school year are split. Some students are glad to be back in person while others seem to have enjoyed the virtual school setting. In a survey, more than half of students said they preferred in-person school, but they said they preferred “pre-covid” school to “post-covid” school. A student commented that “the [new] start times and senior flex are good but school will probably never have the same feel.” It is undeniable that the changes made to this school year may take some adjustment, but I believe that with time, we will settle into our new normal.

This year, our courses have also seen some adjustments, but one thing remains the same from the previous year — Schoology. Last year, Schoology was not a favorite amongst students. The new online platform left a lot of people confused and frustrated, but it seems there has been a change in opinion. When asked, most students said they no longer minded using Schoology. That is great news because it seems that Schoology is here to stay. Many teachers still depend on the platform for their coursework, and one student noted that “it’s easier for teachers to assign a lot of work with more online options which is making it overwhelming [because] every little assignment can be given a grade now since it’s online.” While it may be overwhelming, the teachers are working hard to get back into their groove as they begin working with students in-person again. One new addition to our courses is the blended learning courses. It seems that many students enjoy being able to work independently on their coursework. As of now, blended only applies to a select few classes, but maybe we will be able to see it expanded to other courses in the future.

It seems that students will have to adjust to the new school year, but I’m sure that we can all do it with the help of our teachers, parents, and peers. After all, we’re back to seeing each other face-to-face again! I can’t wait to see what we make of this new year. Together, we can work to make this a great year!
