What’s Up With That: New School Rules

What%E2%80%99s+Up+With+That%3A+New+School+Rules
Schonewise, Karen

Students were welcomed back to the school with hellos, syllabuses, and a new set of rules. Each year these rules restrict the student experience more. The main one is the school is going to issue IDS and lanyards. ID photos are bad enough as it is, the last thing anyone wants is to parade them around on our bodies. This new rule is for our safety, but it really does not feel like it will solve anything. We are like dogs wearing collars, and it is ridiculous that they are forcing us to display ourselves everywhere we go. It violates all rights to privacy.

Another uproar, specifically among the juniors, is the junior parking lot being closed down. No juniors can drive to school anymore, and if they are caught, suspensions and detentions will be handed out. Juniors have been waiting for the past two years to drive to school, and then suddenly, it was taken away for no reason. The junior parking lot is completely empty; they just are trying to avoid the chaos that it creates. There are other solutions to this problem, there can be a limit and a cutoff to allow some kids to park.

The last big rules were ones not as important or monstrous as the first couple. They are getting more and more strict with phones which is not a big shocker. Now, phones are prohibited in bathrooms, and they are still not allowed in classrooms. The other change was Genesis, and it replaced PowerSchool. These ones are pretty normal and standard, so no one is as upset with these changes.

Rules are not everything, and they could have been a lot worse. They don’t torture us for no reason. Rules are there for the school to properly function. With that being said, students are allowed to hate on it because there are other ways to go about it. Administrators’ attempts to get a better school environment are understandable, but is it necessary at the cost of students’ experiences?
