While this school year was met with many rule changes, a new one for everyone was the yellow SMART passes. These new passes are used during SMART lunch to tell teachers and administrators where students are going.
In past years, students would use classroom passes, usually pink, to get around when needed to remain in a SMART location. While some students say it is beneficial, others see it as annoying.
Last year, students were allowed to use any pass to travel around the school when needed. However, not all of these passes gave a clear destination. This free range came with a series of issues as students were not in a specific location at a desired time.
The usage of yellow SMART passes would allow teachers and administration to better determine where a student is going. “As a teacher, I think it’s a good idea so that kids aren’t running around and I don’t have a problem writing them,” said Mr. Nick Fiocco, a photography teacher, said.
To students, it can be tedious to ask for a pass to simply use the bathroom during lunch. Bianca Aulich, a senior at Kingsway, stated, “I feel that the yellow passes are extreme precautions that are unnecessary.” While there are already many different colored passes in use, it seems unnecessary to add another when current passes serve the same purpose.
Other students see it as another rule to follow and aren’t worried about why. Jonathon Bermudez, a senior at Kingsway, expressed that he was indifferent about the topic. Some don’t see the change in passes as a concern but as a normal occurrence.
The main concern of both teachers and administrators is that the students in a school are safe. Each school takes the precautions for keeping students safe differently. While some students may never find common ground and may continue to see Kingsway’s policy as unnecessary, this rule may never change as it has appeared to work smoothly.
