Must-Watch+Movies+of+the+Month%3A+December

December, filled with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, is a time to stop, relax, and reflect. It is a time to take a break from long days of work and a time to spend with family and friends. Are you looking for a way to unwind during the holiday season? Five new movies coming out this month can complete that request.

The Color Purple

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, this musical movie is an adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel about the struggles of an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. The star-studded cast of Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., Colman Domingo, Halle Berry, Corey Hawkins, and Fantasia Barrino provide an updated version of the 1985 film directed by Stephen Spielberg. The film is set to hit theaters on December 25th and is rated PG-13.

The Boy and the Heron

Releasing December 8th, this animated film is highly anticipated by Studio Ghibli fans. Its plot delves into the life of a young boy who is struggling with the loss of his mother; with the help of some friends, the boy ventures into a world shared by both the living and the dead. Directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, the semi-autobiographical film is a magical story of fantasy and adventure.

Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé

This concert/documentary film highlights the record-breaking Renaissance World Tour that singer-songwriter Beyoncé took on earlier this year. The film follows the creative journey she took from the album’s inception to the opening of the tour in Stockholm, Sweden. The director being Beyoncé herself makes this film a more personal, detailed watch. It releases on December 1st.

Ferrari

Set in the summer of 1957, this film focuses on the life of Enzo Ferrari. With his auto-empire in crisis, the ex-racer-turned-entrepreneur pushes himself and his drivers to compete in a 1,000-mile race across Italy, the Mille Miglia. With stars Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz, Patrick Dempsey, and Shailene Woodley, this film is expected to be a huge success. It’s set to release on Christmas Day.

The Boys in the Boat

Directed by George Clooney, this sports drama film is also set to release on Christmas Day. Set in the 1930s, this movie is centered on a rowing team from the University of Washington. From survivors of the Great Depression to 1936 Olympic gold medalists, this story of triumph is sure to warm your heart this holiday season.
