Kingsway is home to many star athletes who demonstrate Kingsway’s mantra, Committed to Excellence, but these two are beyond exceptional in their sports and deserve a special mention.
Tommy Popoff plays two sports for Kingsway, football, and baseball, and he has led both teams to major successes. For football, he played quarterback this last football season, with a record of 6-5. His stats consist of 1000 total passing yards, the longest rush/run was 76 yards, 11 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and 68 completions in all plays. However, Popoff’s most impressive sport is baseball. He committed to a Division I school, Binghamton University, and will major in industrial engineering. He is a catcher and 3rd baseman for Kingsway and on a club team called SJ Young Guns. Kingsway’s baseball team had a record of 15-9 with him having 22 total runs and a batting average of .411. Some other last season victories were 26 single bases hits, 19 runs batted in, and he was picked for the First Team for the Tri-County, which is a high achievement for athletes in the state.
Another example of an impressive sports player is Sabrina McGroarty. She is a midfielder and defender for Kingsway’s field hockey team and WC Eagles, a club team. She is committed to playing Division I field hockey at the University of Iowa. This last field hockey season, the team went 20-2 being named the number one school in New Jersey and number three in the US for field hockey. McGroarty had 15 goals and 10 assists in the 2023 season, and she led the team to win the Group IV Championship the last two years. On a bigger spectrum, she was selected for the AAU Junior Olympics in 2021, and then the next year, she got on the USA Women’s National Indoor Field Hockey Team, in which she played in the World Cup in South Africa. As well as be on the First Team for All-State and Tri-County in 2022 and be the Field Hockey Player of the Year for 2023. Sabrina told us, “I’m always going to be so grateful for the opportunities, friendships, and memoirs field hockey has given me. It’s easy to give so much to a sport I love so much.”
