Starting in September, the Phillies began with five straight wins. They had a record of 62-34 before the All-Star break; however, they went 33-33 after the All-Star Break and finished with the second-best record in the National League behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and second-best in the MLB overall. They clinched a playoff spot after defeating the New York Mets 12-2 and clinched first place in the division after beating the Chicago Clubs 6-2.
The Phillies had a first-round bye in the postseason. The second round against the New York Mets was quite the challenge. The Mets were the hottest team in the second half of the season and moved to the National League Division Series concluding their big win against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Mets started strong, leading the series 1-0 after defeating the Phillies 6-2 in the first game at Citizens Bank Park. Kyle Schwarber contributed with a solo homeroom and an RBI single, putting the Phillies on the board. Unfortunately, the Met’s combined hits outplayed the Phillies, causing them to leave the park victorious.
Game 2, at Citizens Bank Park, had fans on their feet and ready for a win. The Phillies came home with a 7-6 victory over the Mets, tying the series 1-1. Mark Vientos from the Mets carried their team with 4 RBIs and 2 home runs. Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, and Bryson Stott helped bring home a Philly win.
Game 3 at Citi Field in New York resulted in a 7-2 Mets win. A huge team effort of home runs put the Mets in the lead. Sean Manaea, the New York Mets Pitcher, gave up 3 hits, unlike Aron Nola for the Phillies who gave up five.
Closing the series with a 4-1 Mets win at Citi Field ended Philadelphia’s journey in the postseason. The Phillies ended the season with 95 wins and 67 losses. The bats just did not come alive down the stretch and the bullpen, which had several All-Stars, was not reliable.
As for the Eagles, their record for the 2024-2025 season so far is 4-3-0. They have played 7 games in total with wins against the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints, the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants, and the Cincinnati Bengals. Their 2 losses have been against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons.
Their first win was fueled by Saquon Barkley (running back) who scored 3 touchdowns in his first game with the Philadelphia Eagles. His impressive performance continued to the “revenge” game against his old team, the New York Giants, on October 20th. During this game, his heavily yarded runs set up the team for many of their touchdowns for this game.
As for the two losses, the Eagles were defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a score of 33-16. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers started off strong in the first quarter with two touchdown passes from Baker Mayfield to Mike Evans and Trey Palmer. This success continued throughout the game and caused the Buccaneers to start the season off quite strong, leaving the Eagles feeling disappointed.
Their second loss was against the Atlanta Falcons with a score of 22-21. Overall this was a close game with many field goals from kickers Younghoe Koo on the Falcons and Jake Elliott on the Eagles. However, a final touchdown pass from Kirk Cousins (quarterback) to Drake London (wide receiver) brought them up in points to have a 1-point lead as the final score.
Overall, the Philadelphia Eagles are hoping to have a much better season than last year. Head Coach Nick Sirriani has added defensive and offensive coordinators to the coaching staff. With running back Saquon Barkley and wide receivers AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, the Eagles should be set up to have a successful season.
