As Christmas closes in, I’m sure we are all very excited for the upcoming winter break and spending time with our families. However, if you know me, you would know that I won’t be talking about families and Christmas—I will be talking about gifts. 

One of the best gifts the world has given us is the fact that no one really cares about you. While this may sound harsh, people will only care about something if they get something out of it. Don’t believe me? Why not? Doesn’t my opinion matter? While this is not the perfect example, I think you get the point. 

Unless you get something out of it, you really won’t care about it. Whether it be personal satisfaction, a material good, or even just an emotion. Why else would people help each other if not for the sweet feeling you get after? It’s definitely not for the sake of helping someone. Hypothetically, if we were getting bad feelings instead of good ones for helping someone else, we would never do it. A true act of selflessness is a very rare occurrence, and I personally don’t think most people have done many of them. 

Going into a bit of a different front, the reason I said this is a gift is because you can practically do anything you want. As long as it doesn’t bother people, they won’t care. I could go into the center of Swedesboro and just start breakdancing and no one would care. If anything, people will like it. You can wear what you want; as long as it isn’t bothering anyone, they won’t do anything about it. And if they do, in honesty, that just means they care about you. And speaking of caring about others…

If you really think about it, the only reason people would even bother to do anything is because they care about you. They might want you to be like them, as they think they are right and want you to be right as well. They might think you’re not doing something the way you should, and want to help you out. In the real world, there are all kinds of people, and when you start thinking about reasons why they do things, you will find them.

You might wonder, How is this related to school? I have already answered this question: people won’t care much what you do, so do what you want to do. Sure they might say something, but unless they really start bothering you, they don’t care. Personally, this is one of the reasons I changed my whole style. It really feels wonderful knowing that both caring and not caring is great because you can just be yourself.
