As January comes to a close, so does anticipation for the Winter Gala. This is a dance towards the end of the month for juniors and seniors to help celebrate the end of the semester. However, over the past few years the attendance and interest for this dance has dwindled.
In order to gauge how the students felt about the dance, Ms. Kelly called a meeting. During this meeting, she pitched alternative events and allowed the students to get involved through voting. Ultimately, it was decided that the school would move forward with the Winter Gala.
There are many reasons for why attendance at this dance has dwindled over the years. For one, outside guests are not allowed to attend unlike the Homecoming dance. Students dating people that do not go to Kingsway are most likely going to decide not to attend because they wish they could go with their partner. Another reason for a lack of attendance is the price of the ticket and the cost of making this dance happen. With tickets priced at $35, students may find that this is too much for a dance that is smaller in scale than Homecoming. For the teachers and planning committee, dances cost lots of money to set up. Thus, if attendance is low they may want to consider an alternative event that is more economical.
Seniors that attended the dance last year describe the dance as resembling a more low-key version of homecoming. The attendance was less, but it was still a very fun night filled with hanging out with one’s friends, or date.
In regards to the actual night itself, the attendance looked to be about 100-150 people in total with a good mix of juniors and seniors. As for attire, most of the girls wore black short dresses, but others wore long, colorful ones. The guys tended to stray towards a dress shirt with slacks rather than wearing an actual suit like they did at Homecoming. There were more snack-themed food options, rather than dinner dishes. In addition, the south gym was open for students to dance with their friends and have fun. Overall the dance was a fun night and a success for all that attended.
