This winter has been one full of snow-covered grounds and icy roads, all against a backdrop of winter flurries. As a result, we have met the 2026 portion of our school year with a series of two-hour delays and, more significantly, a number of snow days. While we often celebrate snow days in the moment, the absences do, unfortunately, have to be made up later. So, that begs the question: when should students have to return to school?
We have polled Kingsway’s student body on where they think the snow days should be added to the school’s calendar. The results seem to be in favor of adding them to spring break, and the overwhelming reason for this is graduation. Graduation is a set date, and many students feel that it would be annoying to return to school after their ceremony is already over. On top of that, everyone is desperate for summer. The weather is warmer, vacations are planned, concerts need to be attended— that is to say, the plans have been made. The brief week during spring break is nothing of value compared to summer vacation.
On the other hand, those who want the days added to the end of the year feel they need a break during the year more than a few extra days of summer. Spring break lies around the same time as AP testing preparation, causing many students to feel overwhelmed. That week may be their only reprieve from months of studying. Meanwhile, other students may also use spring break as extra, personal study time, given the full days at home.
Over the last few months, Kingsway’s spring break has slowly shrunk, and, if any more snow falls, the make-up days could start cutting into our summer as well. Either way— regardless of where students stand on the make-up schedule— I think we can all agree that we have had our fill of ‘winter wonderland’ and are more than ready for the weather to catch up to the season.
